The Speco of Saint Francis

The Speco Francescano is found only a few kilometers away from Narni and it is one of the most autentica and well preserved sanctuaries of Saint Francis, not only because it was founded by him in 1213, but also because it perfectly represents the spirit and characteristics of the Saint: mystic, peaceful and loving.

It is immersed in a green valley, with a small “chiostro” dating back to the ’400, when San Bernardino da Siena built the dormitory. In the chiostro is found the beautiful chapel of San Silvestro, with wonderful frescos from the ’300. The Marmore Falls, celebrated during the centuries for their beauty, appear like a roaming water column distributed on three drops. Wrapping the flora in a cloud of white foam , cover a height of 165 metres. The scenery that opens to the visitors’ eyes is men-made since centuries, fwhen the Romans tried to canalize the waters of the Velino river to fall and into the Nera river.

The Marmore’s Falls were created by the ancient Romans and their total height of 165 m (541 feet), makes them one of the tallest in Europe and the tallest man-made waterfall in the world.
